May 31, 2019 The country is banking on a new digital strategy
LUXEMBOURG - The government has given the starting point for a more aggressive strategy on data processing.
The production and storage of mass data (big data) is exploding, in connection with the increased digitization of society. To benefit from this, artificial intelligence (AI) is designated as a strategic tool by the government. It makes it possible to transform these data into exploitable and monetizable materials. The ministers of digitalization, Xavier Bettel, and of the Economy, Étienne Schneider, presented this Friday the political orientations of the IA and the digitization of the priority economic sectors.
An innovation strategy has been set out in a 47-page document, which discusses the paths and actions to be taken in these sectors (industry 4.0, logistics, environmental technologies, health technologies, space industry and financial services). Information and communication technologies are at the center of these measures which revolve around three axes: reinforcement of the digital infrastructure, support to companies in the integration of innovative digital technologies and creation of a legal and financial framework favorable.
Improve internal processes
"Less than 0.5% of useful data is now analyzed and exploited. The potential is enormous, "says Mario Grotz, Head of Research, Intellectual Property and New Technologies Directorate-General. "It's a way for businesses to become more efficient, more profitable, more productive. We have always tried to develop the economy by investing in new machines, there we can make better use of the machines by using the data to improve the processes in-house, "he says.
The benefits must also concern everyone, aims Xavier Bettel, in terms of health, education, saving time, data protection, transport, or employment opportunities. "To say that no job is going to go away is wrong, but you need people trained for the jobs of tomorrow. I want that if jobs disappear, the new jobs are occupied by people here in Luxembourg, "said the Prime Minister, which has the ambition to make Luxembourg a reference on a global level on the subject.
