The apple harvest has started two weeks earlier than usual on the ''Steeseler Plateau'' in Steinsel. Orchard visitors can choose between two types of apples. Visitors are welcome to pick their own apples form the orchard, in a tradition that has already been going on for about 45 years.
Due to the exceptionally warm summer, most fruits are already ripe. Luckily, the apples did not suffer from the drought.
Even though the harvest has started already, apples are expected to still be available in October. During this time, several festivities surrounding apple juice (Äppelviz) traditionally take place across Luxembourg. Last year, freezing temperatures unfortunately destroyed much of the apples. This is not expected to happen this year.
This year, plums are bountiful, unlike last year when they were sold out very quickly. The same goes for mirabelles. Pears however didn't fare that well. In Steinsel, many pear trees were badly damaged by hailstorms.
